8 Day Longcase clock. Rare fisherman automation.

John Winstanley, Holywell. c1830

£2800

A good quality Regency period, attractive 8 day longcase clock by John Winstanley, Holywell. It has a very interesting arched white painted 14" dial with a rare fisherman automation and seconds subsidiary chapter ring. The dial has country style houses painted in the corners, roman numerals, gold finish around the main chapter ring and arch, the hands are brass.

The clock has a swan neck pediment hood, the case is 67 inches high. The oak case has good proportions with pleasant patination, it has mahogany and Tunbridge ware cross banding and inlay. Shell inlays to the door and base.

The hand written text on the paper inside the door states:

John Winstanley of Holywell, working between 1791-1835 ( ref. Cescinsky and Webster and G.H.Braillie.Clockmakers of the World Vol.1) He was one of a large respected family of clockmakers working between North Wales and Lancashire. Holywell is in the old county of Flintshire and sits on the estuary of the river Dee.

It seems likely that the clock was commissioned by a keen angler for his amusement.

The automation figure is driven off the escape wheel pinion, thus moving on each beat of the pendulum, and shows the angler "casting" into the lake or river, watched by a lady friend on the bank, who holds his net.
